Campus Wireless Access
Wireless Access
The University of Utah has widespread campus wireless access, including many outdoor common areas.
uconnect Network
The uconnect.utah.edu campus wireless network is an authenticated, encrypted network that uses 802.1x/WPA as a campus-wide wireless access standard. Users must enter their uNID and password during configuration to use this network. The uconnect network is part of the campus network and users must follow all campus Acceptable Use Policies. Guests may use guest Network IDs (gNIDs) to access the uconnect wireless network.
Users on uconnect get:
- unlimited bandwidth
- access to U resources (via a U of U IP address)
- encryption for security
Note: The encryption standard for the uconnect network is changing on May 7th, 2008, at 5 pm. We are moving from WPA2 to WPA network security/authentication to allow more devices to use the network. Users may need to reconfigure their mobile devices to use the network with the instructions below. |
Configuration Instructions (preferred)
"PEAP" (Protected Extensible Authentication Protocol) authentication is available for many devices to connect to uconnect via their built-in wireless clients (no software required). This is the preferred method. Many operating systems will automatically configure themselves with the correct settings. However, some laptops may have difficulty auto-configuring for uconnect. The settings are the same regardless of your operating system or wireless management software.

how_to_connect_to_uconnect networkWhen on campus, users may see the "how-to-connect-to-uconnect" network in your available networks list. By connecting to this option, you'll be directed back to this web page to access the instructions and configure your wireles device. |
Alternate Way to Connect to uconnect
The other authentication method (EAP-TTLS) requires the installation of free client software on some platforms. We have instructions and downloads for most users. This is not the preferred way of connecting to uconnect.
hotspot.utah.edu Guest Network
An open guest network is now available for campus visitors. It is available in all OIT-managed wireless areas.
Users: hotspot.utah.edu may show up in your "available wireless networks." This is not a recommended option for campus members with uNIDs or guests with gNIDs; it is not encrypted and has fewer features, including limited bandwidth, than the uconnect network.
